The village refered in 1739 from the Pococke, but his foundation is reduced
in the IV or JG of century, when had begun the decline of Hephestias. That season,
the founder of village Kalliopi or Kalli emigrated from the Hephestias, which
had ranch in the region.
In the village is saved her marble grave of Kalli. The initial settlement very
probably was found more short in the sea in the place Ariones, where exist ruins.
The Areioni is reported as settlement in document of M. Layras 1355. The name
place at M. Rokko is ancient greek and emanates from word aria (species of oak).
Near in the Kalliopi exists the gulf Keros, that received its name from his
form, that resembles with horn of ox (A. Moshidis, M. Rokkos). The Filostratos
reports the Keros as village and harbour, with the name Keras, something that
confirms the existence of ancient settlement near the sea. Moreover the same
writer, describes a episode in the Keras with a oak (dry). As we reported above
is likely the connection medieval name place Areioni with word aria = oak. The
Keros constituted a important harbour in the Eastern coast of island up to the
later medieval years. A lot of sightseers him report, previously rightly and
previously as Port Khoros(Port Haros). |
