The village refered in 1785 from the Choiseul-Gouffier with the old name Ermenou
the error repeats also later sightseers, as the Launay in 1898 (Ormano).
In his current place, at the delivery, the residents came before 200 years
from the coastal region Voykranos (hill that at the M. Rokko has ancient greek
name and means ok's skull, that is to say head of ox), because the piratical
raids.
Indeed before 1785 it is not marked by the sightseers, while in the V.A. beach
of gulf of Moydros are marked the settlements Corfos in 1548 (Thevet) and Cnifos
around in the 1680 Dapper, Anonymous German). The Chifos to us does not say
nothing, but very probably, is for changed to Corfos (gulf). From other the
three sightseers 1680 did not come in the island, but took information from
other for this. Very probably therefore they made error. We can therefore with
safety suppose that or afterwards the enetic raid 1698, or afterwards Orlof's
(1770), the residents were moved by the Corfo to Romanos.
The older buildings of village are the church of her Christ (around in 1830)
with eminent painted icon screen , work of Ivrian painter Eystratios Haimentes
and the tap (holy water ) in the entry of village that according to the sign
was built (hence existed and older) in 1849 with expenses of priest Hatzioanni,
priest Ceofani and Hatzigeorgioy.
The name of village before 1940 had the form "the Romanos" and later
"the Romanos", in order to it is definitized 1955. In any case so
much in the documents of Jc' of century, what in the erroneous press Ermenou
it was used the press in general, as current. This strengthens the opinion of
A. Mjheli that t name emanated from the existence of some Byzantine church of
Saint Romanos of Melodos, which is known that he lived on the ST' of century
. Exists also the rather improbable opinion (N. Lymperis), that the name emanated
from the word roymani (wooded extent). However thus is not explained neither
general, neither the wme'ga in name.
Easternly the village exist the ruins the ancient and Byzantine city Komi, which
on Ottoman domination was small turk village (6 houses 1874). In the Komi existed
temple of Hercules, which the signs of first published the A. Moshidis in the
newspaper Amalthia of Smyrnis, 1902. |
