Old the village found in the place Ardes, in the north beach of the island.
With the similar name Ardia or Ardeiaij is reported in 1284 in document of M.
Layras. At the delivery the residents came from there initially in the place
Virgin Mary Agalatiani and later in sure point, in gully that is found near
in the hill of Saint Georgios.
In the current place they were installed, when a epidemic of cholera affected
the village. For the name of village the opinions are many. The A. Mihelis supports
that it emanates from the ancient word deirades = top of hills, because the
village has been built in the hills. Kabsidelis-Komninos they write that the
name emanated from the word sardion = brown rock. Finally the N. Lymperis reports
the delivery that the name emanated from the initial aries (underpopulated).
Most likely is that from the medieval village Ardeiai or Ardes with the addition
of article as follows: "in the Ardes, to Ardes, Sardes." |
